Biography

I joined the OU in 2022 and work in the Microbiology Department, supporting the Bioaerosols, Molecular Biology, and Astrobiology laboratories. My role focuses on health and safety, sustainability, and ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day lab activities. I lead the Aspergillus project, carry out aerobic and anaerobic microbiology work, and hold a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. As a trained first aider and neurodivergent professional, I bring attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and process improvements that enhance both safety and efficiency across the labs.

Before moving into science, I began my career as a youth worker but soon followed my passion for the natural world, completing a Foundation Degree in Marine Conservation, a BSc (Hons) in Applied Marine Zoology, and a ResM on Microfibre Interaction of Organisms within Rock Pool Environments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I started as a scientist processing patient samples in the Milton Keynes Lighthouse COVID testing labs and, progressing to a manager role overseeing laboratory operations.

This experience honed my leadership and biosafety skills, while also strengthening my ability to manage workflows, coordinate a team, and implement efficient, safe, and sustainable laboratory practices. In my current role, I draw on these skills alongside my neurodivergent strengths, such as attention to detail, innovative thinking, and structured problem-solving, to ensure smooth lab operations and foster a safe, sustainable, and productive research environment.
