Dr Brunilde Verrier

Brunilde joined the Open University in July 2026 as a Lecturer in Systems Thinking for Sustainability at the School of Engineering and Innovation (STEM Faculty). She contributes to the OU modules "Journeys Through A Changing World" and "Making Strategy With Systems Thinking In Practice" (STiP).

Her research interests revolve around sociotechnical transformations and the supply chain of energy transitions. This includes business responsibility, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects of critical minerals, behavioural changes, and the study of complex systems (feedback and interactions between social, environmental, technological innovations and infrastructures, and political systems). Her methodology of choice is System Dynamics, a systems thinking modelling approach providing both qualitative tools and quantitative simulations to help navigate complexity.

She was previously a senior research fellow in sociotechnical energy transitions at the UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy, and Resources (BSEER). For six years at UCL she worked on the social and political aspects of energy transitions along energy value chains, including business sustainability, business corporate responsibility, community-company interface, and critical minerals governance. 

She guest lectured on natural resources dynamics, natural resources governance, and System Dynamics modelling.

Brunilde also remains a honorary fellow of the Sustainable Minerals Institute' JKMRC at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
