Biography

Professional biography

Dr Claire Armstrong is a Lecturer and Student Experience Manager in the Open University Business School, and the Undergraduate Business Assurance of Learning Lead. She originally joined the OU as an Associate Lecturer in 2009 and continues to teach modules on leadership and data analytics. In her role as SEM, Claire has contributed to several pan-university committees and working groups as FBL representative, including the National Student Survey taskforce and the Student Engagement and Satisfaction Steering Group.
Claire holds a PhD in Organisational Behaviour (University of Limerick), is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Academic member of the CIPD.
 

Research interests

Claire's current research interests are in developing and maintaining healthy research cultures, the meaning of ‘absence’ and ‘attendance’ to distance learning students, and developing robust quality assurance processes in distance education. She has published in Human Resource Management, the International Journal for Human Resources Management, Advances in Human Resource Development and disseminated her research work through various book chapters, reports, blogs and conference presentations.

Teaching interests

Claire teaches mainly in the areas of leadership, data analytics for decision making and research methods. As a SEM, she is currently focussing on B100: An introduction to business and management, which is the first module taken by all undergraduate business students at the OU and has about 5000 student enrolments per year. She also works on B126: Business data analytics and decision making. Previously, as an AL, she worked on modules as diverse as business research methods, strategic HRM and leadership in the NHS.
