My original degree was in archaeology and anthropology, specialising in biological anthropology, from Girton College, Cambridge. My doctoral work was on the social development of infant (free-ranging) primates (on Cayo Santiago island, Puerto Rico), based at the Biology Dept, at the OU. This was followed by post-doctoral work studying marmoset monkeys in north-east Brazil. I have also done research on gender and disability, while based at Warwick University. I am a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language to Adults. I was involved in the intentional spiritual community, Findhorn Foundation, for many years; in particular the holistic health centre, and thinking about inclusive group work. I am a qualified shiatsu practitioner, and facilitator of the Transformation Game, and for 25+ years (1995-2022) had a wellbeing practice - Breathing Space, Tools for Wellbeing - offering bodywork and reflection to support wellbeing.
I joined the OU originally to do my doctorate, and then a post-doctorate. I have tutored on a range of courses in biology, science and social science. I have tutored at all (undergraduate) levels, but presently focus on access and level 1 - where students are coming in, possibly with no or low previous education qualifications, and so my support is often to help get them skilled up for higher education study with the OU. I have had some kind of expertise in using online rooms for student support both individually and in groups.
I have studied OU courses eg U207 Issues in Women's studies; and H808 The Elearning Professional. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
