Biography
Dr. Jayesh Shanthi Bhavan is a Lecturer in Mechanical and Materials Engineering at The Open University and a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and Fellow/Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). His expertise lies in materials science and engineering, with particular research interests in materials characterisation, high-temperature materials, hydrogen-related materials degradation, additive manufacturing, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Dr. Bhavan completed his PhD in Materials Science where his research focused on the design, characterisation, and analysis of novel lead-free solder alloys. He also holds a Master of Engineering degree in Product Design and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Prior to joining The Open University, he served as Lecturer in Engineering Design at Coventry University and has held academic positions at Cochin University of Science and Technology.
His research combines advanced characterisation techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-temperature XRD, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), neutron scattering, SEM/EDS, DSC, and thermal analysis to study microstructural evolution and materials performance. He has led and contributed to several internationally funded projects, including British Council Going Global Partnerships and Royal Society initiatives focused on hydrogen technologies, materials characterisation, and engineering education.
Dr. Bhavan has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in leading international journals including Materials Characterization, Advanced Engineering Materials, Journal of Materials Research and Technology, and Materials Today Communications. His work has contributed significantly to the understanding of lead-free solder alloys, graphene-reinforced composites, hydrogen-related materials challenges, and advanced characterisation methodologies.
In addition to research, he is actively involved in curriculum development, engineering outreach, professional accreditation, and international collaborations. He regularly delivers invited talks, workshops, and training sessions in the areas of materials characterisation, manufacturing, hydrogen technologies, and engineering education
