Biography

Professional biography

My role with the Faculty of Health and Social Care in the Open University is multi-faceted and enables me to be involved in research, teaching, supervision, and external collaborations.  My research is oriented in four main directions:

a) Health policy and planning: evaluation and improvement of health service delivery; and addressing the future health needs of communities.

b) Public health/health of citizens and populations domain: improvement of outcomes for elderly persons & evidence base used for improving patient/student outcomes in health care.

c) Education and improvement of skills, specifically, in mental health professionals.

d) Development of evidence base in several areas of health and social care.

I am currently Chair of the Carers Research Group (CRG) and Chair of the Advisory Group to the CRG. In my other role as Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise Lead for the School of Health, Wellbeing, and Social Care at The Open University, I have been promoting strategies that positively impact my colleagues' research skills and outputs. I also strive to facilitate the development of internal and external networks as well as other platforms that enable the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and practice. With colleagues and external partners, we often engage in funded Knowledge Exchange and/or Knowledge Transfer projects. An example could be our partnership project with Carers in Bedfordshire or our partnership with The Froglife Trust.

I am a Principal Investigator for several research and knowledge exchange projects, the most recent being Take Five to Age Well. 

In all my roles, I place emphasis on a two-way exchange between academia and the wider spectrum of societal and business stakeholders to promote health and social care locally, nationally, and internationally. 

Previous and current academic and management responsibilities include the development of teaching curricula and the coordination of teams of teaching and administrative staff. I have undertaken a number of satellite responsibilities, such as participating in the Board of Studies, CPPD Advisory Board, Ethics Committees, Chairing academic committees, leading staff-student liaison committees, programme periodic reviews and employing external examiners, and providing extensive pastoral care and academic support to BSc, Master and Ph.D. level students.

I welcome expressions of interest from potential PhD & EdD & DHSC candidates.

 

Research interests

I have an on-going interest in ways via which we can improve health and quality of life outcomes in older adults.

The Ageing Well Public Talk Series (AWPT Series) - recently shortlisted for The Open University Research Excellence Awards (watch this SHORT DOCUMENTARY) are structured around The Five Pillars for Ageing Well,. The AWPT Series have a positive impact in educating the public about living a healthy life and encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles. The Five Pillars for Ageing Well framework is evidence-based and anchored in recent research done in the field of ageing worldwide. So far we have built a collaborative network of healthcare and voluntary organisations across the UK. Over the past 3 years, the AWPT Series have been delivered via a GP practice in Suffolk, The Open University, in partnership with Voluntary Health Scotland and internationally with the Cambridge Medical Academy &UKeMED. The series are currently being delivered via The Open University as webinars, in partnership with Age Scotland, Age Uk MK, Age UK Northamptonshire, Public Health Northamptonshire, Healthwatch MK and Camphill MK. This work is accompanied by 5 mini lectures on specific topic relating to Ageing Well.

The Ageing Well Public Talks have been very positively received by service users as well as practitioners and policy makers across the country and internationally. The busy programme of consultancy of the past three years continues and we welcome invitations to contribute to programmers of care, integrated care initiatives as well as all other supporting services in the UK and overseas. 

I am Principal Investigator on externally funded projects (Esmee Fairbairn Foundation in partnership with The Froglife Trust; Carers in Hertfordshire; Ageing Well Public Talk Series) where co-design and co-production of outputs is conceived in close partnership with stakeholders and where possible with people with lived experience.  I also hold several in internal grants looking at health and well-being of carers, their relationships with physical activity. We are researching with informal carers as well as organisations supporting informal carers across the UK about the best ways to support informal carers with the care they give to the cared for persons and their physical as well as mental health and well-being.

Most recently (March 2022) I was funded as Co-I by British Academy (PI Leslie Mabon, STEM OU ) for a study looking at Urban trees as a nature-based solution for heat-resilient green neighborhoods. 

In February 2022 I was funded as Co-I on an add on funding from NIHR (PIs Prof Ryan and Prof Wallace): Additional Funding: Improving the support for older people with learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge others, family and professional carers, and end of life care planning for carers. I have an ongoing interest in ways by which we can improve postural stability, prevent falls and engage older people living with or without dementia in exercise, and if possible outdoors too. See more at https://www.keepmewalking.info/. this project is a great example of Knowledge Exchange and research collaboration between The Open University and The Parks Trust MK. It is great for everybody to get outdoors but that might not be so easy if people are living with dementia, either in community or in a care home. With The Parks Trust MK we are working together to evaluate a new initiative 5WaysCafe that include walks in the beautiful Manor park in Great Linford in Milton Keynes for peole living with dementia and their informal carers. you can check our outputs on OpenLearn, The Parks Trust Channel, and /or our project website.

 In the past, I was involved as co-investigator in two mental health studies which are funded by the NIHR - National Institute for Health Research (COCAPP and COCAPP-A).  Both studies aim to identify the components that are most important to ensure that care planning and coordination for people with severe mental illness is: recovery-focused, personalised & collaborative. I contributed (via data collection, data analysis and presentation of findings - see conferences below) to Preceptorship study funded by East London Foundation Trust to evaluate their mentorship (Preceptorship) programme for newly qualified mental health nurses.

I was also collaborating externally (data analysis - see publications below) on HAPIEE study with University College London. The HAPIEE study is a cohort study that assesses the effects of dietary factors, alcohol consumption and psychosocial factors on the health of men and women aged 45-69 years in four countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which undergo rapid social and economic transition. The HAPIEE study has received funding from the Wellcome Trust, the MacArthur Foundation and the National Institute on Aging.

I have been recently appointed as Academic Consultant on BBC Programme Series titled All in the Mind. https://www.open.edu/openlearn/tv-radio-events/radio/all-the-mind-autumn/winter-2020

I am making a contribution to the development of evidence base for the effective use of eHealth applications. This is multidisciplinary and international in collaboration with Imperial College London, the Nanyang Technological University Singapore & Karolinska Institutet.

Teaching interests

  • As a lecturer and researcher, I have always enjoyed working closely with students and being meaningfully challenged and challenging. I have taught a range of seminars on research methods (both qualitative and quantitative, including statistical workshops), systematic reviews methodology and critical analysis, subjects relating to diverse aspects of ageing, safeguarding of vulnerable adults, public health, epidemiology and health & society to doctoral, taught postgraduate and undergraduate students.I have recently accomplished PG certificate in Academic Practice, gained the Senior HEA Fellowship and was awarded Open University Teaching Excellence Award.

For fourteen years, I have been delivering a series of lectures in the community (overseas, and in the UK), specifically targeting those people who are hard to reach. Public Lectures were delivered in collaboration with Third Age University, Charles University Prague and University of Free Time in Czech Republic within Successful & Healthy Ageing series.

Projects

Urban trees as a nature-based solution for heat-resilient green neighbourhoods

Our project envisions an approach to equitable neighbourhood adaptation to extreme heat through street trees, one that is evidence-driven yet embeds residents’ lived experiences of urban nature and weather extremes into planning and decision-making. Although street trees have gathered significant attention as a cooling strategy at a time when extreme heat events are attracting the attention of urban planners and policy-makers globally, residents’ groups and civil society organisations are arguing that traditional top-down planning approaches ignore residents’ on-the-ground experiences and entrench existing inequalities. In response, we build an interdisciplinary team spanning environmental sociology, urban ecology, health and wellbeing and built environment. We work with communities and urban planning practitioners in two cities in different climate regions – Glasgow (Scotland) and Taipei (Taiwan) - to collaboratively make sense of the broader social and cultural landscape to which environmental science-driven approaches to tree planting need to respond.

Evaluation Involvement services (Retrospective)

Evaluation using semi structured interviews with • Carers (service users involved in co-creating the services) • Stakeholders – trustees and or partners To understand how the participants feel about services being co-created and co-designed. How does it work for everyone involved and whether there is room for improvement going forward. In this evaluation we will be specifically targeting people who are hard to reach to understand: - why they don’t engage, - how the co-design needs to be presented, needs to function for them to engage - what provision they would need and they are not receiving - what they feel this provision is achieving

An evaluation of the impact of the work of The Froglife Trust on the lives of disadvantaged young people

The environmental sector is one of the lowest funded sector in the country, accounting for just 2.6% of the income of the non-profit sector (Clifford et al., 2013). This sector needs to expand the funding base by providing social funders with evidence that this work has a substantial impact on people’s lives and related outcomes. Increasingly, nature conservation funders are seeking evidence that the work benefits both nature and people, particularly people experiencing trauma. Both Social prescribing and green prescribing are hugely increasing (Howarth et al., 2020; Loftus, McCauley & McCarron, 2017; Pilkington, Loef & Polley, 2017). However, the nature conservation sector is missing from this agenda as they are currently not able to provide evidence of their social impact. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the impact that The Froglife Trust has on disadvantaged young people. Participants will include young people aged 10-18 years, or 24 if they have a learning disability, who are considered vulnerable or disadvantaged in some capacity. Participants will be allocated to either the Intervention group or the control group, with the groups being balanced in terms of gender, age, geographical area, and type of disadvantage. The intervention group will participate in the Froglife Trust programme. The control group will not take part in the Froglife Trust programme for the duration of the study but will have access to it at the end of the study. Materials Participants in the intervention group will complete the following measures: • QoL / wellbeing measure? • The Froglife Trust questionnaire • The Froglife Trust quiz

Improving the support for older people with learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge, family and professional carers, and end of life care planning for carers.

There are around 900,000 learning disabled people in the UK and around a fifth are estimated to engage in behaviours that challenge (BTC). These behaviours often occur when the person is upset by a change in their environment. While research and NICE guidance exists on older learning disabled people and their family carers, and separately on people with BTC; policy and research in the UK has so far failed to address how services can be addressed to support older learning disabled people with BTC. We know very little about how family caregivers face the choices and challenges about caregiving as they become older but know that decisions can be left too late to enable choice. We know even less about the experiences of older people with BTC particularly in the context of transitioning to older people’s services, in periods of crisis or at end of life. There is an even more pronounced absence in the academic and grey literature regarding the lives and experiences of older learning disabled people with no family carers. Our study will explore the support and health needs of older learning disabled people and carers and identify ways of easing transitions to different care settings through forward planning and reducing the development of BTC. This is particularly important as learning disabled people are living to an older age. We will explore how carers manage their caring role as they age themselves. How they experience and negotiate behaviours that challenge. How the concept of forward planning can be introduced in a way that is acceptable and reassuring to carers and their children. How health, social care and end of life care services can best support older learning disabled people with BTC including situations where active family involvement is absent. And how commissioners can be innovative in developing a service infrastructure that better meets the needs of this group.

Ageing Well Public Talks 2

As part of the 'Ageing Well Public Talk series' we are exploring how important it is, over our lifespan, to maintain a well-balanced nutrition and hydration as well as regular physical and social activity in the older age, also known as the 'Five Pillars of Ageing Well'. As we know we start ageing the moment we are born. It demonstrates more significantly when we reach a certain age, the usual benchmark being 65+, but our ageing starts much sooner and the way ageing demonstrates when we are over 65 depends on decisions we have been making over our life span. The series and related materials such as ‘The Five Pillars of Ageing Well’ (Nutrition, Hydration, Physical, Social and Cognitive Stimulation) became the cornerstones of further engagement with the public, specifically around COVID-19 and the relating self-isolation, which are now available on the Open University website and the Internet. Creating bridges between communities (in this case: research community researching sometimes in an ‘Ivory tower’ and community of ageing population (for whom it is sometimes very difficult to reach to the findings that ageing related research produced) was the starting point. The overall aim of these series of interventions is to facilitate a step change in user behaviour and support service provision. Self-management and becoming partner in our own health care is an important aspect of these talks. This may have a wider impact in healthcare economies, as ageing and related co-morbidities have a substantial health and economic burden footprint. The Ageing Well Public Talks have been very positively received by service users as well as practitioners and policy makers across the country and internationally. The busy programme of consultancy of the past three years continues and we welcome invitations to contribute to programmers of care, integrated care initiatives as well as all other supporting services in the UK and overseas. There is continuous interest from external partners and we are responding individually as consultancy to each or requests for collaboration.
