Biography
Meleri is a Curriculum Tutor on the Secondary PGCE Programme at the Open University Wales. Meleri holds a First-Class BA Joint Honours Degree in Spanish and Welsh History, a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages, and an MA in Translation Studies (Distinction). Meleri brings over 20 years of experience in education with expertise in leading language-focused teaching and learning projects. She specialises in designing, delivering, and evaluating innovative educational programmes.
For 13 years, Meleri was Subject Leader for Spanish in a secondary school, where she developed deep pedagogical expertise and held key leadership roles. Her commitment to language education extended to her role as Project Manager for Routes into Languages Cymru, a pan-Wales advocacy and outreach programme promoting international languages, which she led until March 2025. Her work has also included contributions to language policy and planning as a steering group member for Global Futures, a Welsh Government initiative for International Languages, and she has gained valuable international experience through a Welsh Government International Learning Opportunity in Namibia, where she researched multilingual practices.
Now a Curriculum Tutor with The Open University in Wales, Meleri is excited to combine her extensive teaching experience with academic research.
Research interests
Meleri’s MA dissertation in Translation Studies centres on mapping the translation of Welsh literature into languages other than English, offering a fresh and underexplored perspective on the global journey of Welsh literary expression, highlighting how Welsh narratives are reimagined across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Beyond her academic research, Meleri is enthusiastic about education and resource development, having designed and authored a wide range of bilingual teaching and promotional materials in Welsh and English. She brings expertise in the Languages, Literacy and Communication Area of Learning and Experience within the Curriculum for Wales and was instrumental in the creation of a bespoke primary toolkit to support the introduction of International Languages in Welsh primary schools. A key area of her pedagogical interest lies in translanguaging which she sees as a powerful tool for fostering inclusive, multilingual classrooms. She is interested in exploring further how translanguaging, along with plurilingual pedagogies and mediation, can be embedded meaningfully into the Curriculum for Wales to reflect the linguistic realities of learners, drawing on her experiences researching multilingual education policies in Namibia, further reinforcing her commitment to linguistic equity and innovation in education.
Teaching interests
As a new member of the PGCE Wales Team, Meleri is enthusiastic about supporting the next generation of student teachers. Drawing on her extensive knowledge in education, project leadership, and school engagement, Meleri is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and experiences to inspire future educators.
