Mr Patrick Phiri

I am a doctoral researcher in the Department of STEM in the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences (EEES) at The Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. I am exploring how agricultural knowledge is translated into action among smallholder farmers, with a particular focus on agricultural extension systems, agroforestry, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development in sub-Saharan Africa.

My research investigates the Knowledge Action Gap within Malawi's emerging macadamia sector, examining how farmers access, interpret, and apply agricultural knowledge from government, private-sector, cooperative, and non-governmental extension providers. By integrating system thinking, livelihood analysis, and knowledge systems research, my work seeks to develop more actionable, inclusive, and climate-resilient approaches to agricultural advisory services that contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), and 13 (Climate Action).

I hold a Master of Science in Crop Production (Agriculture / Horticulture) from Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford, UK and a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management from the University of Malawi, Lilongwe, Malawi. Prior to commencing my doctoral studies, I worked extensively in Agricultural development, project management, and farmer advisory services, supporting smallholder farming communities across Malawi through partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector.
