Prf Severine Hubscher-Davidson

I am Full Professor of Translation Psychology and Wellbeing at The Open University and currently serve as Director of Postgraduate Research for the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies (WELS). My work sits at the intersection of translation studies and psychology, with a particular focus on emotions, wellbeing, and the long-term sustainability of language professionals.

My research explores how affective and psychological factors shape translation processes, professional practice, and career development. I have published widely in this area, including two monographs, and have been involved in a range of funded projects, such as collaborations with the United Nations, where I have delivered training and consultancy on emotional intelligence for translators and multilingual teams.

Alongside my research, I have held a number of leadership roles, including Head of Translation for nearly a decade. I led the design and development of the MA in Translation at The Open University, creating a programme that integrates academic, professional, and technological skills. I am also deeply committed to postgraduate supervision, and have successfully supervised doctoral researchers working on topics such as literary translation processes, wellbeing and emotional labour in language education, and translation practices in healthcare and digital learning contexts.

Before joining The Open University, I held academic posts at Aston University and the University of Salford.

I will not be taking on new PhD students in 2026.
