Biography
Professional biography
Stephen has been contributing to the field of policing education for over twenty years firstly as a national police trainer and quality manager within the police service but over the last decade within Higher Education. He joined the Open University in February 2019 working on the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship Programme (PCDA). Currently Stephen is the Qualification Lead for the Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) and within this, the module leader for the work-based learning element. Like the PCDA this is part of the Open University offering and is part of the portfolio of policing programmes linked to the Police Education and Qualifications Framework (PEQF).
Stephen joined the Open University policing team from Liverpool John Moores University where he was Head of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. Stephen has worked closely with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country and was Co-chair of the Higher Education Forum for Learning and Development in Policing between 2014 and 2018. Within this capacity he worked closely with the College of Policing contributing to the development of the PEQF and the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) curriculum.
Stephen is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Leadership Foundation (FHEL).
Research interests
Stephen’s research interest relates to how different understandings of reflective practice impact on students as they develop their professional practice; that is the interplay between the student and various actors within teaching, learning and assessment environment, as students complete a professional programme.
